IT consulting for companies in Finland
IT consulting at a company of 1 to 20 people is rarely strategy. It is someone going through the software you pay for, the work still done by hand, and what to do next. You get a list of decisions with costs attached, not a slide deck, and the hour estimate is in writing before we start.
- No minimum contract: book a few hours, stop whenever you want
- Scope agreed in writing before work starts
- Independent advice: no reseller commissions
Who this is for
Founders, international teams and companies in Finland whose working language is English, and EU companies happy to work remotely. Typically a business that has grown its tools one subscription at a time and now wants someone to look at the whole picture before the next purchase.
What an IT consultant does for a small company
- Chooses systems. You have a need, and twenty products claim to solve it. The job is to cut that list to three, show what each costs over three years, and say which fits the way you actually work.
- Untangles the mess. A typical ten-year-old company: invoicing in one service, customer data in another, hours in a spreadsheet, files in two clouds and some still on one person's laptop. Nobody decided this; it grew. We draw it out and propose what to remove, what to merge and what to keep.
- Plans before you buy. The part that usually gets skipped. A system is bought, and only during rollout does anyone notice it does not talk to the accounting software, or that nobody has time to own the project. Planning costs hours; a wrong purchase can cost years.
A consultant who also builds
Most small-company IT consulting ends with a document that says what should be done, and then you have to find someone to do it. Finding that someone is often harder than the decision. We can also build what we recommend, through our software development work. That has two consequences, one good for you and one uncomfortable for us.
The good one: the recommendation does not die in a report, and the build price is known when the advice is written. The uncomfortable one: the advice has to survive reality, because we sit in the rollout. That makes recommendations narrower, which is the point.
It works the other way too. If the right answer is ready-made software we do not sell, we say so and name the product.
How consulting is billed
There are three common models, and they are not equally good for the buyer. Hourly work is safest for you when the scope is still unclear. A fixed project price is safest when it is clear. A monthly retainer is safest for the supplier, which is why it is often offered first. We work by the hour for assessments and agree a project price for any build. Our rate is public on the pricing page. You get a written estimate of the hours before we start, and if it looks like being exceeded, we agree that with you before the work continues.
| Engagement | What it covers | Typical size |
|---|---|---|
| First conversation | Phone call, scoping, an initial answer | Free, 30 minutes |
| Light assessment | Your systems, their costs, a written recommendation | 4 to 8 hours |
| Procurement support | Requirements, three suppliers, a comparison | 10 to 20 hours |
| Assessment and build | The recommendation and its implementation | Separate project price |
What the first call covers
- What is costing you money this week. Not a wish list, one concrete thing that breaks or eats time every week.
- Which software you use and what each one costs per month. Surprisingly often two services do the same job and both are paid for.
- Who does what by hand, copying information from one place to another.
- What has been tried before. If a project failed, the reason matters more than any technical detail.
- How much money and staff time is available. Staff time usually runs out first.
After the call you get either an estimate for an assessment or, more often than you would think, a direct answer.
IT consulting or IT support?
| IT support | IT consulting | |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Fixes what is broken | Decides what to buy |
| When you call | When something stops working | Before you buy anything |
| Measured by | Response time | A decision made and its cost |
| Result | Things go back to how they were | Things change |
Rule of thumb: if the printer does not work, you need support. If there are eight printers and nobody knows why, you need a consultant. For the first kind of problem, see IT support.
What to get in writing from any consultant
- What will be delivered and in what form. An assessment can be two pages or twenty.
- The hour estimate and what happens if it is exceeded. An open-ended bill is the buyer's risk.
- Whether you may use the material yourself. If the recommendation is yours, you can tender the implementation.
- Whether the consultant has ties to the products they recommend. A reseller commission turns advice into sales. We resell no software and take no commission on anything we mention.
When not to buy IT consulting
| Situation | Buy this instead |
|---|---|
| You already know exactly what you need | The build itself. Ask for a quote for the work. |
| The problem is one broken device or account | Hourly support, not an assessment |
| Nobody has time to act on anything for three months | Nothing yet. Come back when there is time. |
| You want an outside stamp on a decision already made | Nothing. We write assessments, not signatures. |
| A sole trader with no growth in sight | Ready-made services are enough |
If you can say in one sentence what you want built, do not pay for an assessment of it. Pay for the building.
How we work
- Half an hour on the phone, free. We scope the problem and tell you whether an assessment is needed at all.
- A written hour estimate before we start. What is done, how many hours, what it costs. No open bill.
- An assessment with costs. Three options, the three-year cost of each, and what we recommend and why.
- Implementation, if you want us to do it. A separate decision at a separate price. The material is yours either way.
Who does the work
DT Nova Tmi, Business ID 3595452-5, Helsinki. The founder, Mustafa Tarabya, has a background in business development and digital transformation, and you talk to him from the first call to the last. DT Nova has published 22 apps on the App Store (see them on the App Store, counted 25.10.2026). We do not take several large projects at once; if the calendar is full, we say so on the first call. If the question is where AI fits, see AI consulting. This page in Finnish: IT-konsultointi. To start, book a free discovery call.
Questions we get
What is the difference between IT consulting and IT support?
Support fixes what is broken. Consulting decides what to buy and in what order. If you are not sure which one you need, describe the problem on the free call and we will tell you. Often a question that sounds like consulting turns out to be a small fix, and the other way round.
How long does an assessment take?
A light assessment is typically finished within a week. The slowest part is collecting information from your side, not the writing, so the schedule depends more on how quickly you can answer than on us. We agree the timeline in writing together with the hour estimate.
Do we get the report if we do not order the build?
Yes. The material is yours, and you can use it to get quotes for the implementation from anyone. If a recommendation only works with us, it is not a recommendation, it is a sales pitch. We write it so another supplier can act on it without calling us.
Do you recommend products you earn a commission on?
No. We are not a reseller for any software and take no commission on any product we mention. If the best option is software we do not sell, we name it, even when that means we lose the project. You should ask every consultant the same question.
Can we buy just a few hours?
Yes. The smallest sensible engagement is a few hours, and many questions are settled in that time. We do not sell monthly retainers where you pay just in case. The hour estimate is given in writing first, and any overrun is agreed before the work continues.
Do you only work in Helsinki?
We are based in Helsinki, but most of the work is done remotely, so location matters little. Companies elsewhere in Finland and in other EU countries work with us the same way. Meetings in the Helsinki region can be arranged when they help.
